SUMMARY

Performs various manual and/or unskilled tasks as required for construction or maintenance operations and operate a variety of contractor equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance and repair activities; perform a variety of skilled tasks in the building, maintenance of streets, bridges and drainage systems.   • Operates various trucks, earth moving and construction equipment in the loading and unloading, hauling of various materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Operates other small equipment and tools to maintain streets, bridges, and drainage systems.
  • Works with and assists line crews in digging ditches and trenches, hoisting material, tools equipment and any related work with a backhoe, road grater or front end loader.
  • Performs routine inspections and performs preventative maintenance on assigned equipment refers defects or repairs to supervisor; and cleans equipment as needed.
  • Plows snow and salts roads according to Parish policy.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Basic knowledge of heavy equipment operation.
  • Ability to read and understand the results and purpose of all gauges on all equipment associated with this type of work
  • Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operations.
  • Working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street, bridge and drainage systems work.
  • Ability to observe proper safety precautions.
  • Ability to read or use capacity charts, rigging diagrams, common hand signals, grade stakes or other applicable drawings.
  • Ability to operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions.
  • Ability to perform work from construction specifications or blueprints.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year related experience and/or training as an Operator 5 with the Bossier Parish Highway Department or equivalent experience acquired elsewhere.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Random drug testing is conducted on all Highway employees

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Incumbent must possess a valid State Driver’s License and be able to obtain a Valid CDL license within a reasonable time upon appointment.
