Operator 3/Semi-Skilled Helper

SUMMARY

Assists other senior operators, skilled mechanics or craft persons in set-up and performance of work.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with/under the guidance of a skilled craftsperson in equipment service, repair, machine operation, welding etc.
  • Employee learns a job or specific task requiring several months of on-the-job training.
  • Employee may operate tamping, grinding, lift/hoisting, roller type of equipment.
  • May be required to flag or direct vehicular traffic
  • May assist senior equipment operator as oiler and perform general maintenance of equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one year related experience and/or training as an Operator 4 with the Bossier Parish Highway Department or equivalent experience acquired elsewhere.

SPECIAL NOTE:

Random drug testing is conducted on all Highway employees

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.  Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Incumbent must possess a valid State Driver’s License and be able to obtain a Valid CDL license within a reasonable time upon appointment
