Bossier Parish Agencies Prepare for Winter Weather: Briefing Highlights Coordinated Response Ahead of Season

As winter approaches, the Bossier Parish Police Jury, in coordination with local municipalities, state agencies, and emergency management partners, held a Winter Weather Response Planning Meeting today at the Bossier Parish Central Library to ensure readiness for potential snow, ice, and severe weather events. The briefing focused on maintaining safe roadways and protecting residents throughout the I-20/I-220 corridor and surrounding areas.

The meeting addressed critical updates to the Winter Weather Operations Plan, including revised brine and salt application protocols modeled after Arkansas’s snow and ice response strategies. Agencies confirmed sufficient supplies of salt and brine and discussed improvements to equipment and inter-agency coordination.

With ongoing I-20 construction expected to continue into March, officials emphasized the importance of seamless response efforts, especially around ramp closures and detour routes. Agencies reaffirmed their commitment to assisting the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) throughout the winter season.

Police Jury President Glenn Benton underscored the importance of collaboration:

“Keeping our residents safe and our roads open during winter weather takes teamwork. Every agency, local, state, and parish, has a role to play. By working together, we can respond quickly and effectively, even in the face of the added challenges of construction and unpredictable weather.”

Ian Snellgrove, Director of the Bossier Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness, presented some slides from the National Weather Service that project a weak La Niña pattern for the 2025–2026 winter weather in northwest Louisiana. This pattern typically brings milder temperatures and drier conditions for the region, though officials emphasized the need to remain prepared for potential cold-weather disruptions.

Additional topics during the meeting included fuel supply readiness, clearing drainage ahead of forecasted heavy rain, and prioritizing routes to hospitals and critical infrastructure.

The next coordination meeting is tentatively scheduled for January, unless earlier action is required due to significant weather developments.
