Mill Material Recycled

Posted: Oct 28, 2021, 5:23 PM

When paved roads in Bossier Parish get a makeover, machinery removes the existing surface by grinding the asphalt into small particles. Rather than trying to dispose of that material, the parish has found ways to recycle it.

“We use milled material whenever we can on things like parking lots, walking paths or an access road to a parish facility,” said Assistant Parish Engineer Eric Hudson. “We save a lot of money using this material. Buying another type of aggregate would be quite expensive.”

Hudson said in addition to saving money on material, costs in equipment and labor are reduced by using the milled asphalt rather than having men and machinery lay a new surface.

“It’s cost efficient in so many ways,” he said. “It’s ideal for things like parking lots and an entrance at South Bossier Park. All we had to do was haul it in, spread it and make sure it was well packed. It’s pretty easy to work with and it does a good job.”
