Abby Turner stages Lake Bistineau clean-up day

Lake Bistineau is a little more trash free following Saturday's Cleanup Day, organized by Haughton High School senior Abby Turner. Turner organized, promoted and sought donations and volunteers for the special day which was her senior project at Haughton.

"We have to do a special project that involves others as part of our graduation credits at Haughton," Abby said. "I've grown up on the lake and one day while my Dad and I were boating, we talked about the trash we were seeing withthe lake being drawn down. We talked about it some more and I decided this is what I was going to do for my project."

Volunteers gathered at three boat launches on the lake: Port O' Bistineau, Gryce's Camp and the Bossier Parish police jury's public launch on Parish Camp Rd.

"We had a pretty good turnout and bagged a lot of trash, plus an assortment of things like old tires," Turner said.

State Senator Ryan Gatti grilled sausage and burgers for volunteers at Port O' Bistineau and also sponsored T-shirts featuring a cleanup logo for volunteers.

"I'm hoping this can become an annual thing," Turner said. "Maybe a Haughton senior can add to the activities or refine what we did this year. Bistineau is such a beautiful lake. It would be a shame to let it get choked with trash and garbage."
